Old World Wine Vs New World Wine

What is the difference between Old World wine and New World Wine? The basic distinction lies in geography. The Old World generally refers to Europe, and in regard to wine, the European countries where wine making started. These include France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Austria, Hungary, and Germany. Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, and Moldova can also be considered Old World wine countries. 

New World Generally refers to countries colonized by Europe in the age of empire, mostly in North and South America. New World wine countries include the United States, Australia, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, and New Zealand. China, India, South Africa, and Japan are also considered New World wine countries because wine making was introduced to them by the Old World countries.

The difference that most people care about, though, is in the taste. Old World wines are usually lighter, more acidic, less fruity, and contain a lower alcohol content. New World wines are generally fruitier, less acidic, contain a higher alcohol content, and taste riper. While the two worlds can vary the process by which they make their wine, it is important to note that even if a winery in Argentina is making a Malbec with the same exact instructions that a French winery is using, the result can be drastically different. This is due to various factors that have major effects on winemaking, like climate and materials used. 

Though there will be similarities between wine styles, winemakers have a great deal of control over their process which will vary the flavors even more. So while New and Old World wines have their differences, Wines within the New World may differ greatly as well, as will wines within the Old World. A Sauvignon Blanc will be different to both a French Sauvignon Blanc and a California Sauvignon Blanc.So, take your taste buds around the globe and find the world of wine you like best.
