Rated 97
The tiny production 2016 Cotes Catalanes Pharaon is a selection of older vines and is 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah aged in 50% new barrels. It's another rich, powerful wine that does everything right, giving up sensational notes of black currants, cassis, chocolate, and graphite, with its oak smothered by its wealth of fruit. Full-bodied, concentrated, and layered, it has ripe, present tannins, no hard edges, and beautiful purity of fruit. It will compete with the best of the Southern Rhone and drink well for a decade or more. Drink now-2028.
Wine Tasting Notes
Smokey, sweet oak escapes the glass followed by powerful aromas of black plum, blackberry pie, vanilla bean, violets and freshly cut flowers - all enveloped by a hint of dust and pencil lead. The Department 66 PHARAON Vins de Pay des Cotes Catalanes Grenache entry is massive and lush with ripe red fruits, black raspberry, currant and pronounced minerality. Overall, the finish is concentrated yet balanced with beams of acidity and seamlessly integrated tannins that linger on the palate.
A blend of Grenache and Syrah
