Description
James Suckling Review
Rated 94
I love the interplay of ripe and slightly caramelized pear fruit with spicy complexity in this ripe yet lively Mosel Spatlese. The vibrant blood orange character easily balances the natural grape sweetness on the ample palate. Long zesty finish that's barely off-dry. Drink or hold.
Wine Tasting Notes
Erdener Treppchen, which means 'The Little Staircase of Erden', derives its name from the steepness of the vineyard. In order to facilitate the access to the vines, stone steps were constructed on the hillside long ago. The vineyard boasts a rich soil abundant in iron and red slate, providing a solid mineral structure. The vines themselves are more than a century old and are planted on their own rootstock. The grapes are carefully handpicked at the Spatlese level of ripeness, allowing them to remain on the vines for an additional week or two. Following the harvest, the grapes undergo a cool fermentation process in a combination of stainless steel tanks and traditional Fuder barrels. The fermentation is halted through chilling.
In terms of aroma, tDr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spatlese exudes fragrances of fresh herbal tea leaves, slate, and a medley of orchard fruits. On the palate, the wine presents a delightful blend of sweetness and smokiness, complemented by a refreshing acidity that hints at flavors of lemon and lime.
