Rated 90
The 2015 Las Rocas Garnacha Vinas Viejas is a tank selection of Las Rocas, mostly from old-vine Garnacha from head-pruned 50-year-old vines from the villages of Alarba, Acered and Atea (Sierra Santa Cruz). It fermented in concrete tanks aged for 14-16 months in barriques and 5,000-liter oak vats. There is more ripeness here and blacker fruit too, nicely balanced with integrated oak and a velvety palate with fine tannins and juicy fruit that makes it very drinkable. This should work wonders with food and in the by-the-glass market.
Wine Tasting Notes
The Vinas Viejas is the big brother to the regular Garnacha. Made from 100% old vine Garnacha (a minimum of 45 year old), grown in non-irrigated vineyards, the Vinas Viejas is polished, elegant and layered with soft lush fruit. Aged in American oak (60%) and French oak barrels (40%) it has a complexity and flavor profile unheard of at this price point.
